Monasteries of Meteora is an interesting symbol of Greece.
They were founded by Byzantium hermits, who left the cities to be closer to God. They lived in the rocks and hollows, and made common praying spots for divine services and learning sacred texts. The caves on the steep mountain slopes hid hermits from temptations and protected from wars. But during celebrations, these people had to come to the city temple, and after praying, to return to the cells in the rocks.
In the 14th century, when Greece had multiple wars, the monk Athanasios from the mountain Athos joined the group of hermits. The monk and his pastor found the place on Pillar of Drops and lived there for 10 years. Later, Athanasios decided to build a monastery, like the one on the mountain Athos. The place was also chosen, it was Broad Rock, on the height 613 meters above sea level.
Now the complex consists of 6 opened monasteries, where everyone can enter. But before the visitors need to come to the very top by stoned stairs, hewed out in the rock. Lifting, people can enjoy the view of nature and monasteries. Inside, the buildings are decorated with ancient frescos, some of them are in good condition. They illustrate scenes of the Old and New Testaments. But remember, that it is prohibited to take photos inside the monasteries.
