The theater building in Békéscsaba, which was called Vigarda or Vigado, was built with the help of the state donation in 1877-79 according to the projects of the architect Andor Halmay and the urban engineer Erne Strack. Since 1840, the troupe organized the theater performances in the village, but just as the traveling group. The opening of the theater building took place on March 8, 1879, At that time it had 600 seats including the standing seats for spectators.
In the autumn of 1912, the building was reconstructed, and its ceremonial opening was on November 8, 1913. The new hall was enlarged to 630 seats, there were added the theater cloakrooms and buffets. The workers enlarged the stage, made deepening, modernized lighting and led a central gas heating. The last overhaul of the building was completed in 1994, now it can contain 420 people.
The Vigado Hall, being an important part of the theater, played a significant role in the cultural life of the city from the very beginning. In this picturesque space with gilded Venetian engraved mirrors the performances, concerts, balls, and celebrations were organized.
The theater was not affected during the Second World War… Some time later, in 1953, the Vigado Hall changed its functions: the Apollon cinema, which could be completely destroyed, was temporarily located in the hall. 2 years later, it became again the part of the theater. Initially, it was used as a painting workshop, later – as a rehearsal area. During the restoration in 1994, the theater was almost renovated, and the Vigado Hall modernized. Now it can again bring joy to the city.
Under the management of each director, the theater of Jókai Mór was maintaining its own folklore-theatrical traits. But the directors remembered that the only theater in a rural city should meet the needs of the audience: to show classical and modern drama, as well as comedy, operetta and a fairy tale.
It was happening until the management of the 13th director - Peter Fekete, an artistic director, who brought the theater to the national and world level. Now the troupe actors win the significant awards every year. The theater is a famous object in the cultural life of Hungary.
