Pescara Cathedral

Pescara Cathedral was built in honor of Saint Cetteus, a patron of the city. In 1992, the year when an archbishopric was created, the cathedral became the main building and an archbishop’s residence. 

The cathedral’s appearance, we can see today, is modern, because it was built in the 1930s. Previously, on the place of it was a medieval cathedral of Saint Cetteus. But it was ruined and abandoned, so the local authorities decided to make it out and construct a new one. It was under construction for 6 years and was finished at the beginning of the 2nd World War. After it, the cathedral needed another reconstruction.

It is hard to believe that the cathedral is ancient. It is made in Romanesque style and differs from the other constructions of the 20th century. It has a square facade, windows rosettes, semicircle arches, and an 8-sided bell tower and a line of marbled columns. 

 Inside we can see a tomb of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s mother. He was a famous Italian writer, born in Pescara. A tombstone of his mother is made by Arrigo Minerbi as an arch with a silhouette of a young woman inside of it. 

The interior of a cathedral is also decorated with pictures of saints. One of them is a painting of Gabriele D’Annunzio. He illustrated St. Francis and offered it to the cathedral.
