Bridge of Tiberius is one of the Rimini symbols, which is illustrated on the coats of arms. It connects two parts of the city, divided by Marecchia.
This bridge is ancient, but it is still functioning. It was built about 2000 ago by order of Augustus. He appointed a famous engineer Vitruvius to construct the solid bridge. On the parapet, you can notice the inscription from the ancient times, engraved at the end of construction. The bridge is made of the travertine stone, which was a material for Augustus Arch and Colosseum. To add stability, engineers used unusual methods – they inclined the supporting constructions and connected them.
In 580 the bridge was damaged and was staying in a destroyed state for 10 centuries. Then, Pope Innocent XI decided to restore it. 100 years later, it was ruined again, but that time it was renewed faster.
Since 1885, the bridge has been the state property. People cherished it, but the Second World War put it under danger. The Nazis decided to explode the bridge, but their attempts were unsuccessful.
