Colosseum is the main symbol of Italy. The amphitheater appeared in Rome in the 1st century by order of the emperor Vespasian. His predecessor emperor Nero devastated the city, and Vespasian decided to build a new amphitheater for the locals.
The building of this construction seemed to be impossible because of the huge investment. But after the victory of Ancient Rome in the war with the Jews Vespasian had the money and the slaves.
The emperor died before the Colosseum construction, and his son Titus ran this project. He officially opened the amphitheater calling it Flavium. About 60000 spectators could take place at the tribunes according to their social status. The best places belonged to an emperor and his guests, higher seated the nobles, then - the places for Roman soldiers and rich people. The last category was for ordinary people. By the way, some time later the amphitheater introduced the standing places for the poorest people. All these people came to look at the fights of gladiators or wild animals.
The Middle Ages Colosseum was a sanctuary and its arena – a cemetery. In the 14th century, it was destroyed by an earthquake, and the citizens stole the stones from the fallen parts. Some of them even took the bronzed septums.
In the 16th century, Colosseum became a property of the Catholic church. Despite it, for 2 centuries the amphitheater functioned as an arena of bullfights. Just in the 18th century, it was decided to reconstruct the building.
Nowadays you can see only a northern segment of the amphitheater. To get inside, book the visit at least one week before it.
