Palazzo Maffei

Palazzo Maffei was built on the Place of Erbé in the 15th century. Initially, it looked different. But later, his proprietor Marcantonio Maffei desired to make it more respectable. In the 17th century, he added one more floor and a facade in the baroque style. As a result, the palace got a pompous look, showing the status of his proprietor. The Maffei family was so rich that it possessed 5 palaces in Verona. But the one on Erbé Place is the best known. 

Before the palace visitors can see the column, decorated with the lion of Saint Marcus – the symbol of Venice.

The facade of the 1st floor has 5 large arches, ornamented with castle stones. The feature of the 2nd floor – the wide old windows with graceful balconies and columns. The facade of the 3rd floor is similar, but with smaller windows.

Inside the palace tourists can notice the ancient statues and bas-reliefs. But the main sight in it – the spiral stairs made of stone. It leads from the very basement to the roof. The construction is unique because it is made without any central rests. Unfortunately, the architect of the palace is unknown. But the historians assume that was a Rome School representative.
