Daugavpils Fortress is a unique architectural landmark in Latvia. Built in the early 19th century, it occupies about 150 hectares. The territory of the fortress includes 80 buildings and several streets. It is a truly huge complex, which miraculously survived the French invasion of Russia.

In 1810, it was decided to build a fortress to strengthen the borders of the Russian Empire before the war with Napoleon. Military engineer Heckel was in charge of the works: he made sure that 12 thousand people worked tirelessly in two shifts to build this important facility as soon as possible. The construction was suspended during the French invasion of Russia but was resumed immediately after its end. Until the beginning of World War I, the fortress housed the garrisons of the Russian Imperial Army: its walls could accommodate up to six thousand soldiers. In 1920, there were military units of Latvia, and during World War II – the Red Army.

World War II left a permanent mark on the history of the fortress: there was a camp for Soviet prisoners of war called Stalag 340, and a Jewish ghetto operated in the bridgehead, where all the Jews from the surrounding cities were taken.

Today, the fortress is open to the public. Memorial plaques are installed in places of detention of Jews and prisoners of war. Commemorative events are also held there. Besides, battle reenactments, various festivals, and celebrations are regularly held on the territory of the fortress. Today, the 10 streets and 80 buildings are not only a reminder of the hard times and bloody battles, but they are also increasingly used for various festivals and exhibitions.

The Historical Center, located on the territory of the fortress, conducts tours, that are mostly dedicated to historically important events that touched these walls. The interior of the fortress is not so much modest as even military: every stone, every brick here stands as if at attention. At the same time, the majesty of the Russian Empire's army, its self-confidence, and readiness for a challenge are in the air.
