The largest Catholic cathedral in Lithuania and one of the outstanding monuments of European religious architecture, the Cathedral Basilica of apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul of Kaunas, is located in the heart of the Old Town, not far from the Town Hall Square.
The construction of the cathedral began in the early 15th century, although it was completed and opened only two hundred years later. The cathedral, which is almost 3,000 square meters, makes a strong impression due to its monumentality. However, its interior decoration is even more impressive and sophisticated.
The magnificent icons by Michal Elwiro Andriolli and Johann Gotthard Berchhoff, the talented painters of the 19th century, adorn the medieval interiors. The oldest icon of the cathedral devoted to the suffering Mother of God accomplishes the outstanding atmosphere of the place. According to local legends, this mural grants deliverance. It was recognized as miraculous in the 17th century, therefore, the long queues of Catholic pilgrims from all over the country are usual to see in front of the mural.
The central place of the cathedral is its main altar, which is the work of Tomasz Podhajski, a famous Polish sculptor. It was created in1755 and now is considered to be one of the most beautiful altars in Lithuania. The amazing two-tiered altar is decorated with a sculptural composition and a mural of the Crucifixion and Mary Magdalene painted by an unknown author. There are 9 altars in the cathedral, in total.
The cathedral is a bright representation of the brick Gothic style and has a height of 30 meters. It is visible from almost anywhere in the Old Town, the historical center of Kaunas. The cathedral always had a vital role in the history of the Catholic clergy. For instance, a Cardinal of Pope Vincentas Sladkevičius and a Bishop Motiejus Valancius, as well as a Lithuanian poet Maironis was buried on its territory.
Some outstanding sights of Kaunas are also located close to the cathedral. The Kaunas Castle, as well as a charming park, are located just a few meters away on the picturesque bank of the Vilia River. The buildings of the Town Hall and the city museum are located on the other side of the river, where the streets lead to the center of the Old City with cozy coffee shops.
