Rabat, a former suburb of the ancient capital of Malta and a real Mecca for shopaholics and restaurant lovers, wins travelers' hearts in the first minutes. If Mdina is always quiet and peaceful, Rabat has an atmosphere of the eternal holiday. Bright colorful coats of arms of ancient Maltese dynasties coexist with modern neon signs, recalling the town's past when it was only inhabited by the noble and rich residents. Today, this is evidenced by the luxurious medieval mansions.
One of these outstanding examples of medieval architecture is Bernard House (Casa Bernard). Despite its name, the building can hardly be called a house. The magnificent building is more like a palace that has risen in the very heart of the ancient city since the 16th century. Moreover, it is still home to an ancient noble family, who is happy to invite tourists inside, introduce them to the family's life, tell them about family traditions.
The history of Bernard House really deserves attention. The house was built on the ruins of a villa dating back to the ancient Romans. From the ancient building, spacious wine cellars with massive stone vaults typical for those years have survived to this day. For more than a hundred years, the house remained untouched. Its reconstruction began only with the arrival of the famous French doctor Saviour Bernard in Malta in 1723. The house acquired the features of the solemn Baroque style and began to resemble a palace.
The descendants of Saviour Bernard owned the mansion until the 21st century. The house was named after them and has never changed its name. Today, it is owned by the noble Magri family. The couple restored the medieval building, its rich interiors, and antique furniture, including an ancient piano. Several days a week, the owner of Bernard House conducts tours for tourists, and if desired, rents out halls for weddings and special events.
