Where do the wealthiest people of Kotor live? Behind the mighty fortress walls of the Old Town! It seems to crawl up the mountain slope, and the houses here are tiny, narrow but tall. It may not look like the residences of the rich, but it is picturesque and cozy here.
In general, the Old Town is a lovely and friendly place. The ancient streets intertwine with each other, leading you to new beautiful spots each time. This place is more than 2000 years old, and many houses have stood here since the very foundation of the town. But it looks as if the builders just completed the works yesterday. As proof that the buildings are several thousand years old, you can take only the dark spots and some moss on the masonry.
There are three entrances to the city, the main being the Sea Gate. It is the easiest to find: there is a small pond with emerald water near the entrance. The gate is decorated with wall carvings portraying the Madonna with Child. Some contented cats will be enjoying the sun close by. In general, cats are one of the sights of the Old Town. They are everywhere. Walking along the narrow streets, you will notice small plates for food on the cobblestone, stairs, or a bench next to a house or by a fountain.
You can also get into the Old Town through two other entrances: the South Gate and the Gurdich Gate. You will have to go over the drawbridge. The entrance is above a cave, which flooded over time, forming a pond where fresh and seawater are mixing. It was used as additional protection against enemies.
In the Old Town, be sure to go to the Pillar of Shame and the old prison building. Listen to street musicians, have a break at a café in the square, and taste delicious ice cream. Also, you can climb one of the gates and enjoy the view of the town, both its old and new parts, from loopholes. Somewhere in the back alleys of the Old Town, there is a staircase leading up the mountain to the St John’s Fortress.
