The biggest and most beautiful church in Leiden, Pieterskerk, is known as the church of the Pilgrim Fathers. From 1609, the English Puritans that arrived in Holland with their pastor John Robinson lived and conducted services here. After 11 years in 1620, the English pilgrims left for America on the ship Mayflower and founded their first colony in Plymouth. This historical fact is described on a commemorative plaque placed on the southern facade.

The church history itself begins much earlier, in 1100. At that time, Leiden was a small town and did not require a large temple, so there was a chapel on the site of the Pieterskerk. But the settlement grew, so did the number of parishioners. And in the 15th century, a Gothic church that we see today appeared in Leiden. Spires, outlandish decor, stained-glass windows – the best architects of that time created everything here. Their work cost a fortune.

Unfortunately, historical events severely damaged former beauty. For instance, during the Reformation, when people actively fought against religious art, almost all the stained-glass windows were destroyed. An explosion in 1807 – several powder kegs exploded in the centre of Leiden – demolished everything left.

The church had a small bell tower that can only be studied in historical manuscripts. For several centuries, citizens in Leiden had been erecting a tall tower, reaching 110 metres. It was called King of the Sea because it served as a lighthouse for seafarers. But in 1512, during a strong gust of wind, the tower collapsed. It was perceived as a sign from above, and the structure left unrestored. In 2000-2010, the temple underwent a large-scale restoration to former glory. Most of the stained-glass windows were reconstructed as well.

Today the Pieterskerk is not a church but a creative space for holding exhibitions and concerts. The main treasure is the organ of Van Hagerbeer, made in the 15th century.
