All the streets of Evora lead to the Praсa do Giraldo (Giraldo Square). So it was in the Middle Ages after its construction, and so it remains today. The ancient landmark of Evora, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its great architectural and historical significance, remains the cultural and geographical heart of the city.

The square appeared when the Military Order of Aviz, created by the first Portuguese king to liberate the country, finally achieved success in overthrowing the Moors. The name of the square reminds the locals of the fearless hero, under whose leadership the esquires recaptured the city in 1166-1167.

The main decoration of the square is a marble fountain, created in 1571 on the site of demolished Moorish buildings. This Baroque fountain was designed by Afonso Alvares, the leading court architect of King Sebastian of Portugal. It has eight jets, each symbolizing one of the main city streets leading to the square. The fountain is topped with a bronze crown, which appeared in 1619. According to popular legend, King Philip III of Spain considered this fountain a venue worthy of hosting a coronation and ordered the ceremony to be held right here.

The square also has another symbol, the Church of Santo Antao (Church of St. Anthony). It stands on the north side of the square on the site of the old medieval chapel dedicated to St. Anthony the Great and the ancient Roman triumphal arch. The construction of the new shrine began in 1557 during the reign of King Henry. It was led by Afonso Alvares and other court architects: Manuel Pires and Miguel de Arruda. The interior of the church is decorated with paintings by local artist Jeronimo Corte-Real, altars made of gilded wood, as well as a unique marble altar from the 14th century, preserved from the chapel of St. Anthony.

Today, the legendary Giraldo Square is one of the most popular places among citizens and travelers. You can enjoy the impressive historical landscape of the square while strolling along cobbled streets, relaxing in the shade of arcades, shopping, or sitting in cozy cafes.
