The largest and most picturesque pedestrian street in Lisbon, its main artery, appeared in the eighteenth century. Connecting the most popular tourist attractions, Commerce Square and Rossio Square, it still increasingly attracts tourists and Portuguese fashionistas, who fill the street with the sounds of clattering heels. Skilfully hand-paved wide sidewalks and ancient architectural monuments enchant photographers and aesthetes, while cheerful dancers and musicians create a unique festive mood. Colorful selfies look especially impressive against the backdrop of old mansions built in the Pombaline style, popular during the revival of Lisbon after the 1755 earthquake. That's when the Rua Augusta also acquired a traditional black and white mosaic, which still sets the mood of all passers-by.

Chestnut traders and lovely flower girls selling colorful daisies and gerberas, as well as white and purple calla lilies, contributed to the vibe of the picturesque street.

Rua Augusta is filled with music from street artists' theatrical performances and the joyful laughter of spectators. There are the best shops and souvenir stores, noisy bars, and cozy restaurants, where you can try the popular Portuguese dish, bacalhau cod with boiled potatoes. While enjoying the taste of bacalhau in a small family restaurant or the view of unique patterns of the "calçada" (Portuguese pavements), be sure to get to the neighboring streets with equally sonorous names. The ancient Rua do Sapateiro (Shoemaker's Street) houses boutiques of popular footwear brands in Portugal. Rua da Prata (Silver Street) and Rua do Ouro (Gold Street) are the best places to find luxury jewels by local craftsmen. By the way, Rua Augusta is home to such tourist attractions as the Museum of Design and Fashion and the Lisbon History Center. And the famous Santa Justa Lift and the ancient Carmo Convent of the Carmelite Order are just a short walk away.
