The many-sided Portuguese capital lies on seven picturesque hills and is full of observation decks that offer beautiful fantastic views of the ancient streets richly dotted with historical and cultural monuments. One of these picturesque parts of Lisbon is the observation deck Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, or Graca, as the locals call it.
The generously sized observation deck is located on the top of a hill with the snow-white old Graca Church and Convent, after which it received its second name. Translated from Portuguese, “Graca” means “grace.” And this name certainly suits this place surrounded by the fabulous landscapes and unique monuments of ancient architecture. The monks left the monastery back in the 19th century. Since 2019, there has been a luxury hotel, which offers stunning views of Lisbon. The church is still functioning and revered by the citizens. While enjoying one of the oldest examples of temple architecture, do not forget to take a walk in the charming Augusto Gil garden near the church. The official name of the popular observation deck is Miradouro Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, after the famous Portuguese poet and author of children’s books Sophia de Mello Breyner. A bronze bust statue of her can be found in one of the deck’s corners.
But the main reason to visit this place is the fabulous view of the historic city center, the heart of beautiful Lisbon and the real pride of the locals. You can come here to enjoy a magnificent view of the ancient square of the national hero Martim Moniz and the hallmark of Portugal, Saint George Castle. Besides, there is a small cozy cafe: it is doubly pleasant to enjoy the wonderful scenery with a cup of aromatic coffee or a glass of wine. But get ready that you will undoubtedly want to return here to forever remember the views of ancient Lisbon at sunset and dawn, in the rays of the midday sun and illuminated by thousands of lights in the dark.
