The Mountains of Madeira abound with waterfalls. Local pastures almost always include streams of water falling on rocks or even on a path laid along a former irrigation canal. The largest and most romantic waterfall, primarily due to its name, is Bride's Veil located near the town of Seixal, the municipality of Porto Moniz. The waterfall is part of many sightseeing routes in the northwest of the island, and can also be reached by car or intercity bus. Bride's Veil looks especially impressive on a sunny day. From a height of 212 meters, a constant stream of water falls directly into the ocean. The spectacle depends on the waterfall fullness, or rather, on how long it rained in the mountains.
You can't get any closer to it. There is an impregnable rock by the side of Bride's Veil and an old road under it (just washed out by the waterfall). For tourists, there is an observation deck two hundred meters away from Bride's Veil, slightly below the road connecting Porto Moniz and Sao (San) Vicente. It is extremely dangerous to climb closer to the waterfall on your own, as landslides and rockfalls are frequent in these places!
Besides the waterfall, tourists can enjoy a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean (you can't help but start humming the theme of the movie "Titanic" when salty spray reaches your face) and a panorama of Seixal. By the way, you can also visit Seixal before or after the waterfall. It is characterized by a small population (600 people) and the fact that it is one of the few places on the island where you can safely swim in the ocean. Fenced by a breakwater bay with calm water, gentle entry into the water and imported black sand allow you to fully enjoy your beach holiday.
Diving and fishing are also available. The infrastructure is rather wild, as is the nature around the bay, but there is a cafe on the beach. What’s not to like? If you want to be sure that the weather will be sunny and hot, then come here in September or October. Then the air and water are close to their maximum warmth. If you still want warmer water, Seixal сan offer you several lava pools: the ocean water in them warms up better because of its low level.
