Most tourists know the Romanian city of Braila for its luxurious 19th-century villas and picturesque Danube riverfronts with amazing cascade fountains. But those who are genuinely in love with nature, explorers, and fans of ecotourism, are attracted to these places by the world-famous Beusnita National Park, established in 1943. Thousands of tourists come here annually, and it welcomely greets its visitors at any season. The entire 36,000-hectare park is covered with a lace veil-like network of trails and various routes. Grottoes, waterfalls, solutional caves, crystal clear blue lakes, one of which is the famous unfreezing “Bey’s Eye,” – never before has nature been so generous to one place!
The main attraction of the park is the Nera River gorges. There is the Bigar Waterfall, one of the most beautiful destinations in the world. This unique eight-meter natural landmark is a truly magical sight. The water of the Minis River flows over tufa, shaped like a mushroom cap and covered with emerald moss. It looks like a giant mushroom standing in heavy rain. The silvery splutter of jets playing in the sun, accompanied by the noise of the falling water, is magnificent, but no less fascinating is the legend of this place.
It tells the story of a local peasant family that had no children. The wife grieved so much that she turned to a witch for help. The witch promised that the woman would finally become a mother if, in spring, she would drink water. There was one condition: when her daughter was born, she could not fall in love. If this happened, the girl would die. Of course, all the prophecies of the witch came true: the woman drank water and gave birth to a girl, and when this girl grew up, she fell in love with a young man named Bigar. The parents got scared and locked the girl in a cave. The witch heard the cry of the desolate girl and offered to reunite her with her lover. She took the girl’s beautiful hair with her tears on it and turned her into a waterfall. The wind brought the young man to her. He got drowned in her tears, and their fates united.
