Aktru (4004.4 meters) is one of the main peaks of the North-Chuysky Range. Its slopes are covered with glaciers that are the source of the river of the same name. Passing through the Kurai steppe, it flows into the Chuya River. Aktru is a huge mountain-glacial basin that includes 7 glaciers: Large and Small Aktru, Waterfall, Dome of Three Lakes, Trainee, Kar of Small Aktru, and Tronov Pants. The total area of the glaciers covering Aktru is 16 square kilometers. In some places, the ice can be up to 360 meters thick.
In the Aktru Valley, at an altitude of 2840 meters, there is a high-altitude Blue Lake with a depth of about 14 meters. The bright turquoise water has a temperature of +3°C in summer and freezes in the second half of September. The lake is the starting point of all the routes to the top. They vary in complexity, from the simplest to the most complex ones. In addition to glaciers and the lake, you can visit the forked rock of Baranyi Lby (Sheep's Foreheads), Mount Kartash, and the Teacher Pass, from which you can see the top of Dome of the Three Lakes.
In 1938, a high-altitude alpine camp was founded in the valley. It still works successfully. Local mountains attract extreme athletes of all kinds: climbers, snowboarders, mountaineers, hikers. Thus, the camp is used as the main base for preparing for the ascent. Besides, it provides mountaineering training courses here.
Specialists of Tomsk State University also conduct scientific work here. Glaciologists study the regimen and activity of the glaciers, traces of ancient glaciation, climate, the regimen of mountain rivers, etc.
Untouched by civilization, wild, attractive, the nature of the valley surprises travelers with its pristine beauty. In any season, tourists can enjoy magnificent landscapes and explore the reaches of the valley. Glacial lakes, moraines, mountain peaks covered with snow caps, glacial terraces are eye-catching and mesmerizing. One can endlessly admire the lovely views of this place.
