The pearl of the Altai Mountains, Middle Multinsky Lake, is located at an altitude of 1730 meters and is slightly smaller than Lower Lake. Its shape resembles an elongated rectangle, the length of which is 1990 meters, the width is 730 meters, the average depth is 6 meters, the deepest place is 18 meters. Besides, numerous screes slide from its steep shores.

It is connected with Lower Lake by a narrow stone rift, passing through which the water of the Multa River forms the Shumy Waterfall.

Middle Multinsky Lake is protected by the state. In 2000, it got the status of a biosphere reserve. It is one of the most visited lakes because this is where the hiking routes diverge to other, more distant lakes of the Multinsky Cascade.

Near Middle Lake, there is the cordon of the Katun Reserve. It is located in the highest part of Altai, and Belukha Mountain adjoins its territory.

The reserve is home to elks, bears (about 600 individuals), wolverines, Siberian mountain goats, snow leopards (there are no more than 20 individuals left in Altai), many species of birds, including rare ones, like northern wryneck, and European roller (one of the most beautiful birds in Russia). The unusually clear water of the Multinsky lakes is home to valuable fish species: Siberian sturgeon, sterlet, taimen, northern pike, carp. The nature of Middle Lake is mesmerizingly beautiful. And although Lower Lake is buried in the greenery of coniferous forests, there is less forest vegetation, but evergreen shrubs and sedges feel like rightful owners here.

The work of the reserve, numerous volunteers, and the state's assistance have made a significant contribution to the preservation of the wild Altai nature. The inaccessibility of some areas, as well as the scarcity of people, help to maintain the original ecology of these places.
Thousands of tourists visit the Multinsky lakes every year. Even though some places are not so easy to reach, many travel and nature lovers go to Middle Lake to witness all the beauty and power of the harsh Altai Republic.
