The thing that will surely draw your attention in Bratislava is an unusual futuristic bridge over the Danube. It looks like an alien monster from the science fiction novel by H. G. Wells.
This is one of the main symbols of the city, along with the Monument to Plumber Chumil and the fabulous snow-white Bratislava Castle, which amazes not only with its exterior but also with an observation deck.
The massive metal structure is abbreviated as the UFO Bridge or Most SNP, which means "Bridge of the Slovak National Uprising", although it is often called the New Bridge (Nový most).
The bridge is over 430 meters long and is technically unique. It seems to float over the Danube as it has no supports in the river. Thus, the UFO Bridge is one of the largest cable-stayed bridges in the world.
The grand opening took place in 1972.
The construction, which involved the best Slovak engineers and architects, lasted 5 years. The bridge has 4 car lanes, as well as convenient bicycle and pedestrian paths so that anyone can walk across it.
At a height of 85 meters, there is a restaurant with the sonorous name "UFO" and an observation deck with a 360-degree view of the city. A high-speed elevator will take you to the highest point of the bridge, which resembles a flying saucer, in just 45 seconds. In the evening, the bridge is illuminated by 52 floodlights, and its observation deck offers a magnificent view of the city. They say that in clear weather you can see neighboring Austria. Loving couples can leave their padlock on the bridge: there is a special heart-shaped metal structure.
The entrance fee is 7.4 euros. Admission is free for children up to 111 centimeters tall. Visitors to the restaurant do not have to buy an entrance ticket.
Other sights of the capital that can be visited near the bridge are the St. Martin's Cathedral, Bratislava Castle, the Slovenian National Museum, and the Plague Column of the Holy Trinity.
