Skalnate Pleso Mountain Lake

Skalnate Pleso is a small Alpine lake located at an altitude of 1751 meters above sea level in the High Tatras. You can reach by the modern cable car that starts from the lower station "Tatranská Lomnica" to the final point called "Lomnický štít", which offers a magnificent panorama of the High and Low Tatras.

You can get to the intermediate station, where the lake is located, by cable car in a comfortable 4-seater cabin. Those wishing to climb higher can transfer to a large 15-seater gondola. The high-speed climb costs 18 euros. Active tourists can choose mountain hiking trails.

Although Skalnate Pleso itself has become significantly shallower, the area around the lake is still popular with tourists, especially in winter. It offers a well-developed infrastructure for skiers, many cafes, restaurants, an ice rink, and evening lighting.

Within a radius of 10 kilometers around the lake, there are more than 160 hotels to suit every taste and budget. The nearest international airport is in Poprad, about 20 kilometers from the lower station.

The main attraction of Skalnate Pleso is the astronomical and meteorological observatory, located just above the lake (1786 meters above sea level). Founded in the middle of the 20th century, it belongs to the Slovak Academy of Sciences. This observatory helped to discover many comets and asteroids in Slovakia.
