The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is a cozy old city with the spirit of medieval Europe. It fascinates tourists from the very first minutes they see the stone Ljubljana Castle at the very top of the hill, hear the local legends of dragons and knights, visit the beautiful French-style parks, and, of course, explore its main attraction, Ljubljana Old Town.

The main treasures of the city, the magnificent architectural monuments, stand under the gaze of the castle right in the heart of the Slovenian capital.

The Old Town is entirely pedestrian. It can be reached by medieval stone bridges. The most popular among tourists is the Triple Bridge. It is the best place to start exploring the Old Town of Ljubljana. The famous old bridge connects the two main city squares, Preseren and Town, where all tourists go first. The bridge over the Ljubljanica was built in this place back in the 13th century. But the one that adorns the historic center today was built in the 19th century by the famous Italian architect Giovanni Pico.

The picturesque Town Square has been the main city square since the 12th century. A couple of centuries later, the square was adorned with the Town Hall, a magnificent example of pure Gothic style. At the beginning of the 18th century, the Town Hall was decorated with Baroque elements.

Another noteworthy attraction of the square is the delightful Fountain of the Three Carniolan Rivers with allegorical statues symbolizing Krka, Sava, and Ljubljanica. The famous fountain is the last creation of the legendary Venetian master Francesco Robba, donated to his beloved city.

From Town Square, the road leads to another famous city square of Cyril and Methodius, which houses the main shrine of Ljubljana, the majestic Cathedral of St. Nicholas. This magnificent 18th-century monument of temple architecture is famous for the original frescoes of the 18th-19th centuries.

Then comes Vodnik Square, named after a Slovenian priest and poet. Once it was adorned with a monastery, a church, and an old cemetery. Unfortunately, they all were destroyed by the strongest earthquake in 1895. The ruins were removed, and the site of the ancient shrines was occupied by the Central farmers' Market popular among the locals.
