In North American countries, you can often hear about loyalists whose houses (the present-day museums) have survived to this day and received the status of historical and cultural monuments. After the American Revolution, loyalists were people who lived in the British colonies and stayed loyal to the British crown. Escaped from New York at the end of the 18th century with other 6000 loyalists, the famous Merritt family was also one of them. Initially, the family led a modest lifestyle but already in the second generation, the Merritts made a fortune and became one of the most respected families in Saint John. It is evidenced by the luxurious mansion, a vivid example of federal architecture.

Built in 1810, Loyalist House, an outstanding monument of history, is the oldest building of Saint John to remain in its original state. Two floors of the spacious house were occupied by living rooms, a kitchen, a dining room, a cabinet, a keeping room, and two separate staircases: the main staircase and the service one. Over thirty windows perfectly illuminated roomy halls, filled with warm sunlight and fresh air, and two antique fireplaces warmed up on cold winter evenings.

The first floor belonged to the house owners. The second was occupied by servants who managed the house and a carriage house with a summer carriage and sleigh of the Merritt family.

Nowadays, most of the old mansion is a museum. Here, you can see fascinating Georgian and Victorian antique furniture donated by the New Brunswick Historical Society and other rare art pieces. Walking around the halls of the house-museum transports visitors to the 19th century. It demonstrates the culture and life of the wealthy citizens of Saint John and immerses them in the magical atmosphere of richness and luxury that replaced poverty and sorrow of the long war years.
