Greenland is an unusual country. Even the museums there seem strange to those who often travel to Europe. For example, the Maniitsoq Museum. What is it remarkable for?
Firstly, it is located in four colonial-style buildings. Well, it would seem that quite a lot of museums occupy several houses at once. What is the difference then? The difference is that these houses were first located in a different place. Initially, they were built in the area where the fish factory is located today. The former residential area was well suited for an industrial enterprise. So the houses were not demolished but carefully moved to a new location. Moreover, they were not inhabited by people but became a city museum.
Secondly, each house is unique in its way. One of them was the residence of the colonial administrator. In the second lived his assistant. The third house was a cooper's shop, a bakery, and a small brewery. And the fourth was a popular fish store. Fresh and frozen salmon supplied by local fishermen was stored in its basement.
The creators of the museum tried to preserve the "spirit" of these premises. Therefore, the permanent exhibitions are very diverse and interesting. You can learn about the life of the inhabitants of the North before and after colonization, see national costumes, household items, get acquainted with the art of the indigenous people, their traditions, and legends. Everything that reveals the history of the city of Maniitsok and the whole of Greenland are carefully collected in these four well-preserved houses.
Periodically, the museum hosts thematic events for both children and adults. These are often interactive meetings where you can try on costumes, hold old tools, learn how to fish a few centuries ago, and why whales have always been the most valuable catch. In other words – Museum Maniitsoq is the center of the cultural and creative life of the city. It impresses guests from anywhere in the world.
