The heritage, artistic and cultural life of an area can attract tourists and create better quality of life for those who live there.
An Italian student smashed a Greek sculpture at Milan’s Academy of Fine Arts of Brera after he hopped on its lap in order to capture that perfect selfie.
Every year on December 23, the Mexican state of Oaxaca presents the most impressive display of carved vegetables in the world.
In the center of Sisimiut, there are several old non-residential buildings in perfect condition. This is the Sisimiut Museum, an extremely interesting place. Like some other museums in Greenland, it does not consist of one building. The museum is located in ten houses, most of which were built in the 18th century. There is an old shop, a missionary’s house, a fisherman’s hut, and a shop. It turns out that this is not only a museum, as everyone is used to, but also a unique collection of architectural gems characteristic of the Northern country.
Such museum complexes allow residents of Greenland to avoid the need to build large new buildings to present the exhibits. Also, old historical houses that reveal the secrets and features of local life can be preserved there.
Each building of the museum has a thematic exposition. In one of the houses, you can get acquainted with archeological finds. In another, you can explore the life of local people. In the third, you can find out how the missionaries lived in cold Greenland several centuries ago. And these are not just restored household items. These are carefully collected and preserved authentic items that are several hundred-year-old.
The main treasures of the Sisimiut Museum are parts of the interior of an ancient church. For example, the altar, which dates back to 1650. The temple in which it stood was rebuilt several times. And when it was later demolished, the altar was saved.
You can also see models of boats that were built by residents for fishing. Fishing played a key role in the formation of Sisimiut.
The museum often hosts art exhibitions of local authors. These are very interesting exhibitions since most of the paintings are landscapes that capture the beautiful and unusual nature of Greenland.
