More than 400 years ago, the Spanish captain Francisco de Ibarra founded this city. But the State Assembly approved the Founders’ Day just in 1922. Surprisingly, it was celebrated 20 years later. The authorities organized the first official event only on July 8, 1945, though inhabitants secretly celebrated this holiday since 1929. Later, in 1950, the holiday got a status of one of the most important festivals in the history of the city. Feria Nacional De Durango or Durango’s National Festival was held on Plaza de Armas. Originally, it was a marketplace of cattle and agriculture. Over the years, the exhibition turned into a funfair with cultural and sports challenges.
Now, Durango’s National Festival is a big party dedicated to the city. People are celebrating it for several days. The main day is on the 8 of July. It is the Founders’ Day of Victoria de Durango. The main events of the festival still take place in Plaza de Armas and a park area of Parque de la Velaria. More than 10 thousand people can accommodate on the shores of its artificial lake. The festival has a traditional parade and impressive dance and theater show. Local and foreign artists are performing there. Riding, breathtaking attractions, sports competitions, master classes in cooking national dishes, and various exhibitions take place in the city. The feature of this grand celebration is the festive fireworks.
