A cinema, military barracks, horse stables, and cinema again… An infinite number of devastating floods, revolutionary war, and political reforms affected its condition. These were not all the problems of Manuel Doblado Theater in Los de Los Aldam. It was abandoned. Whenever the fate of the theater seemed to be sealed, it was reborn like a phoenix with even greater force and beauty.
The history of Manuel Doblado Theater, known as Dogido Theater, begins in 1869. This building in the French neoclassical style was designed by Spanish architect José Noriega Agüera. Initially, it was named Gorostiza Theater in honor of the Mexican playwright Manuel Eduardo de Gorostiza. It was officially opened in 1872 under the name Manuel Doblado Theater in honor of the Foreign Minister. That day, two operas by Giuseppe Verdi - La Traviata and Macbeth – were performed. Its success was reached at the end of the XIX - beginning of XX centuries. It was the time of unforgettable performances of Ángela Peralta, Virginia Fábregas García, Jaime Nunó Roca and Julián Carrillo Trujillo.
Later, the theater building was the site of political rallies. Then, it was functioning as barracks, stables, and public parking for cars. For many years, it was in decline. But, in 1976, people decided to restore it. They modernized all lighting and sound equipment, as well as built a new gallery named Jesús Gallardo. Now, exhibitions of national and international artists are regularly showing here.
Nowadays, Manuel Doblado Theater is not only a well-equipped venue for musical, theatrical, and artistic performances. It is an area for conferences and assemblies. The building, decorated with four Tuscan columns of the Corinthian order, is located in the very center. In can contain 1308 people. Each year, more than 150000 people come here. It is also an area for the Cervantino International Festival for the past ten years.
