Cathedral of Morelia

The entire historical center in the beautiful and unusual city of Morelia is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is hard to find so many architectural monuments in one area. It can be said not only of Mexico but the whole world. Almost all the sights of the city were built in the XVII-XVIII centuries. But the main attraction is the most beautiful cathedral. Thousands of tourists visit it every year. 

Its construction started in 1660 by the architect Vicente Barroso de la Escayola and continued about a hundred years. That is why different architectural styles are combining in one building. The cathedral in the Baroque style is one of the most famous religious buildings. Its towers have almost a 70-meter height. In the upper part, there are large crosses: one was made of iron, another - of stone. The iron cross symbolizes the divine essence of Christ, and the stone one - the human nature. The shrine is located on a hill, so you can see its towers from the valley.

The cathedral was devoted to the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ. The bas-relief on the door depicts the biblical story. Its interior is also magnificent but made in the neoclassical style. It happened because of restoration in the 19th century.

The central place is taken by an organ of the 20th century. It was brought from Germany and established in 1905. The quality and beauty of its sound, the excellent acoustics of the building make the cathedral suitable for holding various events. Among them were the International Organ Music Festival and the International Music Festival.

Despite all its features, the Roman Catholic Cathedral got its fame owing to the first Mexican Emperor Agustín de Itúrbide y Aramburu. Here, in the silver font, the emperor was baptized.
