Los Remedios National Park impresses by its size. It was built by the state government in the surroundings of Naucalpan in 1938. This cultural and historical monument has an area of 400 hectares. It is located around the Cerro Moctezuma Mountain. During the ancient civilizations’ era, the peak of the mountain was an observatory of the Indian people - the Aztecs. Now, there is an archeological zone of the Chichimec culture in the park. Here, people examine a religious temple of these Native American nomads. You can see an aqueduct and Basilica de Los Remedios near the excavations. The aqueduct was constructed during the period of the Spanish colonialists. Basilica de Los Remedios has been preserved to these days in a very good condition. It is known in the Catholic world as Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The construction of the colonial aqueduct began in 1616 by order of the leadership of the Viceroy of New Spain Diego Fernández de Córdoba. But 150 years later, this amount of water was no longer enough. By order of the new governor Joaquín de Montserrat, workers built an additional arch system. It was located at an altitude of more than 1.5 meters from the ground. Over time, an aqueduct more than 500 meters long with 50 arches could no longer give enough water. So, it became an architectural monument of the city.
But the actual feature of the Los Remedios National Park is the Basilica of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Catholic Church was built at the end of the 16th century. Like the Basilica of Virgin Mary of Guadalupe in Mexico City, it has a great historical and religious significance. It mixes different styles, from baroque to neoclassical. Despite its age of 400 years, it amazes with its grandeur and beauty.
Unfortunately, over the past century, 75% of the park has been settled illegally. It happened because of the city's enlargement. So, it leads to the felling of trees and destruction of historically important objects.
