The Argentine city of Salta is often called Salta la Linda or Beautiful Salta. This city is a mix of architectural masterpieces.
One of them is Catedral de Salta, decorating the central square with its look.
The shrine was built in the second half of the 19th century on the site of an old church destroyed by an earthquake.
So, in 1858, workers started to build the cathedral by order of Bishop Jose Eusebio Colombresa.
Well-known masters were working on its construction. Among them were the architect Felipe Bertres and talented artists from Italy, Brazil, and Bolivia. The main altar was made by the monk Louis Georgie.
As a result, they created a magnificent, majestic Baroque church, luxurious both outside and inside.
The construction of the temple took a long time. It was open only 20 years after the start of construction. But the church was not completed. Parishioners visited a cathedral without towers and bells.
And only in 1882, the church obtained a finished look. Workers built two bell towers and completed the decoration.
The cathedral has a rectangular shape. It includes three naves, a choir, and a semicircular apse. The dome is located above the transept. The color scheme of the cathedral facade is unusual. It has yellow and pink shades, looking great during the sunset.
The cathedral is located next to the Archbishop's Palace. This harmonious location forms an architectural ensemble in a Neo-Baroque style. It is a model of architectural art of the 19th century.
I am assured that Salta does not leave you indifferent. Plan a longer trip, and you will not regret it.
