Convento de Santa Teresa is one of the oldest buildings preserved in Cochabamba. The construction of this magnificent baroque complex started in 1760. But, unfortunately, due to insufficient funds, its construction lasted forty years. All this time, nuns were living in an unfinished building and raising funds for construction.
They had several difficulties. For example, an earthquake that occurred about 10 years after the start of construction destroyed a completed chapel. So, people had to build it again. And it was successful. At the beginning of the 19th century, all the works were completed. And a magnificent monumental building appeared in the city. It was richly decorated both inside and outside.
The old altar is still preserved here. Many of the monastery’s rooms are decorated with wonderful sculptures. Some of them were brought from Spain, some were made by local craftsmen.
Today, Convento de Santa Teresa functions as a convent. A small community of Carmelites lives there. There are few nuns here, usually - not more than 15 women. They do services and support the museum located in the monastery.
It is possible to visit a museum only by tour. Besides, there are restrictions on photography and video. During the walk, guests walk not only through public areas but also visit places that are not allowed to see in ordinary monasteries.
Usually, all excursions end next to the high monastery chapel offering a magnificent view of the city. Climbing is not so easy, but it is worth doing that and enjoy the beauty of the local landscape.
