There are hardly any travelers left who can be surprised by a botanical garden or a zoo. Even visiting national reserves has long ceased to be an exotic type of tourism. However, not every place can boast a natural area of 110 hectares with a wonderful garden, a zoo, and a museum, located within the city.

The Botanical Garden and Zoo of Asunción is the real pride of the capital of Paraguay. Thousands of tourists visit it every year, this place has no analogs, and it never ceases to amaze visitors. Its doors were opened to the public in 1914. At that time, it was only a botanical garden founded by a professor of botany Karl Fibrig and his wife Anna Hertz. Later, they created a zoo, where animals were kept in conditions close to their natural habitat. Much of the great landscape design was made by Anna Hertz.

Today, locals call the botanical garden and zoo the “green lungs” of the city because of its magnificent tree crowns, which are up to 150 years old, as well as its extensive collection of plants, numbering 500 species. These are rare medicinal herbs that the indigenous people of Paraguay have used for many years. But no matter how important these natural exhibits are, the love and recognition of visitors belong to the local zoo. Its territory is home to 65 species of animals, including the Chacoan peccary, which was long considered extinct and was discovered again in 1975. There are African lion and elephant, Bengal tiger and hippopotamus, anaconda and crocodile, as well as giant anteater and crab-eating fox. Some species of animals and birds are endangered. Besides, in the building of the old estate of the former President of the country Carlos Antonio López, the Museum of Natural History has placed its collection, where you can get acquainted with the stunning world of the flora and fauna of Paraguay.
